Comment: Summary. In the best preserved sites of Italy - Pompeii, Herculaneum and Ostia - the technical provisions for waste removal appear to have differed in terms of construction as well as distribution. Pompeii had many cesspits and a scattered network of sewers. Rainwater and waste water were mainly disposed of along the streets. Herculaneum had far fewer cesspits but a rather more systematic network of sewers. In addition, rainwater and waste water were led out of the town there by way of the paved streets. Ostia had no cesspits at all, but a complete and uniform sewer system. The provisions of these three cities will be discussed and it will be shown that the geologial underground and the gradient of the building land constituted the main reasons for the differences.
