Fragment of a sarcophagus with a Centaur and Nereid

From Ostia.
Date: 230-260 AD. W. 0.585, h. 0.36.

A sea centaur can be seen, carrying a shell with both arms. The bust of a man in a toga is depicted in the shell. In his right hand the centaur holds an oar. A naked Nereid rides on his back, of which only the torso and the right arm are preserved. Her robe coils around her forearm and seems to billow out in an arch at her back. The sea centaur turns towards her.
