In Pieterlen, about eight kilometers to the north-east of Biel, Roman finds had been reported for a long time, for example the discovery of 1400 coins in 1549. In 1987-1988 utilitarian rooms of a villa were excavated at the locality Badhaus.

Seven buildings phases were recognized, the first six from the second half of the first until the middle of the third century, the seventh from the fourth century. Long halls were identified as storage and utility rooms. Other rooms, also on the upper floor, will have been apartments. Hearths pointed to kitchens.
