Cities, villages, fortresses - Basel-Stadt - Riehen

In Riehen a Gallo-Roman temple was discovered in 1921 at the locality Pfaffenloh. A small cella (4 x 4.60 m.) rested on an almost square structure (10 x 10.40 m.). Around the temple was an enclosure wall (38 x 43 m.), with a semicircular part opposite the temple that has been interpreted as a theatre (diam. 32 m.).

There may have been another temple at locality Maienbühl, but the interpretation is quite uncertain. In 1966-1967 a square building (12.80 x 11.20 m.) was excavated. The walls were 0.70 m. thick. Only the lower part of the walls was of stone, up to a height of 1.50-1.70 m. Inside was a hearth. The finds point to a date in the third quarter of the first century.
