Cities, villages, fortresses - Graubünden - Castiel

In Castiel, to the south-east of Chur, a late-antique fortification was excavated in 1975-1977. It is located next to the church, on a plateau called Carschlingg.

The plateau measures 80 x 20-30 m. On the circumference a wall was built, 0.80 m. thick. At the east end was a trapezoidal tower. Along the northern and southern side were small buildings, on average measuring 4.50 x 5.50 m., perhaps mostly made of wood. In most of these buildings hearths were found. The fortification has not yet been dated accurately (a date in the second half of the fourth century has been suggested). After a major fire it was restored in the sixth century.
