Cities, villages, fortresses - Luzern - Sursee

In Sursee, at the north end of the Sempachersee, remains of a settlement have been found during excavations in the 1990's, 2000-2001, and 2022. It has been called a vicus. Along the main street - today's Bahnhofstrasse - so-called strip houses were found, up to 10 m. wide and 30 m. deep. Artisanal activities took place in the backyards. The oldest remains, of wood, have been dated to the middle of the first century. A kiln for ceramics belongs to this early phase. In the course of the second century stone buildings were erected.
