On the south side of the Oberer Hauenstein Pass many wheel ruts of old roads can be seen to the east of Balsthal, up to Holderbank. The modern path has been named Römerstrasse. Most of the ruts are 1.43 m. apart, a few 1.08-1.10 m. The latter are thought to be Roman.
