Stretches of road on the Unterer Hauenstein Pass are presumably from the Roman period, in view of the distance between wheel ruts: about 1.08-1.10 m. They were found in Hauenstein-Ifenthal, near the summit. The nearby Chäppeliflue, a breakthrough through the rock, may be Mediaeval (wheel ruts were discovered here in 1993). Similar ruts were found to the north in Läufelfingen (Basel-Landschaft).
