Many villas are known only superficially. For the area around Olten and Solothurn maps with the known remains were made by Caty Schucany. She also gives estimates of the size of the population. Here we must think of the (extended) family, personnel, and workers. She assumes the presence of 10 people in a small villa, 50 in a medium-sized one, and 120 in a large one. For both areas she reaches a total of 2020 persons in the rural area, 8 persons per square kilometer around Olten, 6.1 persons per square kilometer around Solothurn. The number of people living in the two settlements, Olten and Solothurn, could have been 1200 and 700.
