Cities, villages, fortresses - Schwyz - Freienbach-Ufenau

In 1958 the remains of a Gallo-Roman temple were found on the island of Ufenau in the Zürichsee. The island is to the north-east of Freienbach and to the south-west of Rapperswil (further to the north-east is another island, Lützelau). The remains are below the church of Peter and Paul, in its present shape from 1141 AD. The podium measured 17.90 x 17.90 m. It had a porticus on all four sides. The cella measured 7.30 x 7.30 m. Two protruding walls indicate the entrance. From the ceramics has been deduced that the temple was in use after 150 AD and abandoned before 250 AD.
