A stretch of a Roman road was discovered in 1920 at the Bözberg, to the east of Effingen (some eight kilometers to the west of Brugg). It was part of the road from Augusta Raurica (Augst BL) to Vindonissa (Windisch AG). Excavations were carried out in 1920, 1968 and 1970 by Rudolf Laur-Belart. The section is an artificial breakthrough, partly a "hollow" road (known as "Römertor"), partly a stretch (30 m. long) with steps and two carved out grooves for the wheels of wagons (1.08-1.10 m. apart, 0.40 deep), and partly a passing place with four grooves. The road was used until the late 18th century.
