Roads, mountain passes, quarries - Aargau - Münchwilen-Sisselnfeld

A large building was excavated in 1963-1964 near the Rhine in Münchwilen, at the locality Sisselnfeld. It was probably a mansio, a stopping place and inn, for people travelling from Augusta Raurica (Augst) or Vindonissa (Windisch). In the centre of the building was a courtyard (25 x 19 m.) surrounded by corridors. On the east side was a series of small rooms, on the west side were larger rooms. In the south-west corner were bathing rooms, some heated. Further to the east was another large structure that was investigated only rudimentarily.

Plan of the building. Hartmann-Weber 1985, 186.

In the vicinity of the building two water conduits were found that were investigated already at the end of the 19th century, on various occasions in the 20th century, and again in 2018. The water pipe of the smaller of the two conduits was made of terracotta and measured 0.125 x 0.05/0.06 m. on the inside. It lay in a U-shaped channel, 0.30 m. below the ground. It had a gradient of 2%.
