Cities, villages, fortresses - Aargau - Mumpf

In Mumpf, in the north-west part of the canton near the river Rhine, a remarkable military structure was investigated in the late 19th and early 20th century, and in the years 2017-2019. It lies below and around Gasthof Anker, built in 1829.

The structure replaces earlier buildings: bathing rooms (some heated) and a long wall with buttresses, perhaps of a storage building. It is made up of a rectangular hall, flanked by two semicircular towers, and measures 26 x 17.50 m. At a distance of 19 m. a moat was found, 5-7 m. wide and 1.70 m. deep. Coins from the second half of the fourth and early fifth century emerged. Similar structures have been excavated in Sisseln (AG) and Aegerten (BE).
