Cities, villages, fortresses - Aargau - Suhr

The reformed church of Suhr, to the south-east of Aarau, seems to have been built on top of a Gallo-Roman temple surrounded by columns.

Excavations in 1956 by Reinhold Bosch led first of all to the discovery of a reused Roman capital.

In the back part of the church, at the lowest level, the remains of a square structure were found, measuring 8 x 8 m. This would have been the cella of the temple. Amongst the finds were fragments of paintings, parts of marble slabs, and bricks with stamps of Roman legions.
