In 1854-1855 a large part of a villa was investigated in Gränichen, to the south-east of Aarau, at locality Muracher. The excavator was Ing. Rothpletz, who worked on behalf of the government. The dates of the finds range from the beginning of the first to the end of the third century. The building was destroyed by a fire, during or shortly after the reign of Probus (276-282 AD), as suggested by coins.
